Joe Moran

Joe Moran – A Life in Art

Five Lamps Arts Festival presents Joe Moran – A Life in Art, a retrospective celebrating the Dublin-born sculptor’s lifelong dedication to art.

Born and raised in East Wall, Joe worked in Dublin’s docks before turning to sculpture in the 1970s, developing a distinctive casting method using bronze, steel, wax, and clay. His public artworks, including Family in Fairview Park, emphasize themes of unity, family, and place. A self-taught, working-class artist, Joe believes art should be accessible to all, and his work has been exhibited internationally, including in Ireland, the UK, the USA, and Europe.

Joe’s sculptures often tell stories, shaped by his experiences and artistic influences. His first artwork—a crucifix made from scrap metal—immediately drew attention when he placed it on a chapel altar at a power station. He has exhibited continuously from 1978 to 2007, with commissions and works displayed nationally and internationally.

At 86, Joe continues to create daily in his East Wall studio, constructing, welding, molding, and carving. This retrospective at Coles Lane, Ilac Centre, where he exhibited over 20 years ago, presents a selection of his sculptures, maquettes, paintings, drawings, and archival materials, offering a unique insight into his remarkable career.
