Niamh Gleeson and a group of actors will be doing a rehearsed reading of her new play, The Birthday Cake at Irish Writers Centre.
Niamh was born and raised in Dublin and currently lives in Mayo. She trained as a professional actor in the Gaiety School of Acting, before turning her hand to writing. She is writer-in-residence in Marino CDVEC and annually writes a children’s play for the Theatre Studies course, which is performed in dozens of Primary schools in the inner-city. In 2007, Niamh founded The Five Lamps Theatre Company with Roisin Lonergan. She has written and produced three full-length plays for the company; The Telephone Exchange, The Mariettas and, most recently, Dear Frankie. Dear Frankie premiered in 2010 and has toured to over twenty countries and played in the Gaiety in March 2012.
Her work has received wide acclaim, including the following:
The Telephone Exchange
“An irreverent, joyful look at women’s lives in the 1960s…a witty piece…well worth a look” -E.P. Moriarty, Village Magazine
The Mariettas
“…this charming tale of nostalgia and friendship by Niamh Gleeson…There is a disarming, attractive simplicity to The Mariettas” -Patrick Brennan, Irish Theater Magazine
“This is a heart-warming take that The Five Lamps Theatre Company can be proud of” -Lucy White, Metro
Dear Frankie
“The play stands alone as a fabulous piece of entertainment and theatre” -Patrcia Redlich, John Murray Show RTE 1
