The Lark Theatre was fully packed with The Five Lamps play on two consecutive nights. We spoke to the actor Eoin O’Sullivan and with the audience on February 29th, 2024. Watch the video to see highlights from the first night’s performance.
The play is based on a short story by Roddy Doyle, first presented at the Five Lamps Arts Festival in April 2023 The show is an adaptation from the Life Without Children collection by Roddy Doyle published in 2021.
Adapted and Directed by Joe O’Byrne, and starring Eoin O’Sullivan, the story takes place after the beginning of the Covid lockdown, following a man who makes the irrational decision to come to Dublin to look for his son, who he has not seen in four years.
The story is a gentle hymn to the inner city, and as in all of Roddy Doyle’s writing about Dublin, his stories explore the humour and emotions of people on the edge, but despite this The Five Lamps becomes a truly life-affirming story.
The play is on at The Civic Theatre from March 12th – 14th, and at Liberty Hall, on March 22nd – 23rd, 2024.
