In the Footsteps of Samia
Is a play using music, dance and media about Samia Yusuf Omar, charting her years training to be a runner in Somalia which was in a state of civil war, and run by an Islamic group. She was prevented from training but persevered, and represented Somalia at the Olympics in China in 2008. She came last in her heat, but was determined to do better at the London Olympics. She decided to try and reach London to train, and undertook the ‘journey’, the perilous immigrant road that led through Africa all the way to Libya. Unfortunately she was unlucky and died when the boat she was on capsized in the Mediterranean as its passengers were being rescued by the Italian navy.
